Learn how to set up your RODECaster Duo for podcast recording with step-by-step instructions, from connecting microphones to configuring APHEX processing and multitrack recording.

Quick answer

Connect your XLR microphones to the combo inputs, power on the RODECaster Duo, and use the touchscreen to assign channels, apply APHEX voice processing, and select multitrack recording mode for your podcast.

Why the RODECaster Duo Works for Solo and Duo Podcasts

The RODECaster Duo is the compact version of the Pro II, designed for one or two hosts. It shares the same audio engine and APHEX processing but omits the extra guest channels. This makes it ideal for solo podcasters or interview duos who want professional sound without the bulk or cost of a larger console.

One trade-off: you only have two combo XLR/1/4" inputs, so if you need to record more than two microphones simultaneously, consider the RODECaster Pro II instead.

Step-by-step setup for podcast recording

  1. Connect your microphones: Plug XLR cables into the two combo inputs on the back of the RODECaster Duo. Use dynamic microphones for untreated rooms to minimize background noise. Avoid using phantom power with dynamic mics; it is only needed for condenser microphones.
  2. Power on and select a preset: Press the power button on the rear panel. On the touchscreen, choose a podcast preset or start from scratch. The preset will set basic input levels and routing. Selecting a preset saves time, but you can still adjust every parameter later.
  3. Assign channels and enable multitrack recording: Tap the gear icon on the touchscreen, go to Recording, and set Mode to Multitrack. This records each microphone on a separate track, making post-production editing easier. If you only need a single stereo mix, choose Stereo mode instead to save storage space.
  4. Apply APHEX voice processing: On the channel strip, tap the APHEX icon. Enable the Aural Exciter and Big Bottom effects to add clarity and warmth to your voice. Adjust the intensity to taste. Over-processing can sound unnatural; start with subtle settings and listen through headphones before recording.
  5. Set headphone mix and monitor levels: Plug headphones into the front 1/4" jack. Use the physical fader or touchscreen to adjust the monitor mix so you hear yourself and your guest clearly without feedback. If you hear echo or delay, check that monitoring is set to zero latency and that your headphones are not leaking sound into the mic.
  6. Start recording and check levels: Press the red Record button on the touchscreen. Speak at your normal volume and watch the input meters. Aim for peaks around -12 dB to -6 dB to avoid clipping. If levels are too low, increase the preamp gain on the channel strip; if distorted, reduce it. Never rely on post-production to fix clipping.
